In the case of human rights violation and criminal of liberation war of Bangladesh, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, who was sentenced to death, died from a heart attack At 8:40 PM on Monday night. He passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un).
Professor S.M. Mustafa Zaman, head of the cardiology department at BSMMU, confirmed Sayeedi's death in the news media.
Sayeedi's son, Masud Sayeedi, told to news media on Monday night that his father was fine in the morning. However, his health deteriorated suddenly, and he passed away at 8:40 PM with a heart attack. Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was 84 years old.
As a deputy leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was well-known for both his political work with the organization and his work as a religious speaker.
Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, who was suffering from heart disease, was transferred from Kashimpur Central Jail to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur on Sunday afternoon. Later, he was taken to the BSMMU in the capital for advanced treatment the same night.
Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was arrested in Dhaka on June 29, 2010, in a case related to charges of inflicting injuries during religious sentiments. Since then, he had been in custody. He faced trial for his involvement in the anti-humanity crimes of 1971.
On February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Delwar Hossain Sayeedi to death for crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, looting, torture, and forced conversions. Following the verdict, there were allegations of violence by workers of Jamaat and the Islami Chhatra Shibir in various districts of the country, resulting in many deaths.
Delwar Hossain Sayeedi appealed against the tribunal's verdict. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty on September 17, 2014. The death sentence was commuted to a life sentence instead of the death penalty.
Sayeedi also filed an application for a review with the Appellate Division. However, there were no changes to the death penalty in the review application. He was kept in Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur since then.
Following Delwar Hossain Sayeedi's death, Jamaat-e-Islami expressed mourning through a statement last night.
Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was elected as a member of the National Parliament in 1996 and 2001 from the Pirujpur-1 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
It has been reported from the Jamaat's side that Delwar Hossain Sayeedi joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 1979. He became a member of Jamaat's central committee in 1982. In 1989, he was elected as a member of the central advisory council of Jamaat. In 1996, he was elected as a member of Jamaat's executive council. Since 2009, he held the position of deputy leader in Jamaat-e-Islami.
A central leader of Jamaat has stated that one of Delwar Hossain Sayeedi's sons resides abroad. After his return to the country, arrangements will be made for his funeral and burial.
