Why And How Pakistani Freelancers Lose Work Due to Internet Disruptions?

For the past few days, internet services in Pakistan have been disrupted, leading to slow connections and hindering online communication. This has severely impacted Pakistani freelancers, with much of their work now being shifted to countries like Bangladesh, India, and others in the region.

One freelancer, who wished to remain anonymous, told Geo TV, "We are all facing various challenges. Many freelancers have lost potential long-term clients. We can't send or download files sent to us via WhatsApp."

According to Geo News, internet users across the country are experiencing slow speeds and partial outages, especially when using mobile data. However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has yet to provide an explanation.

Pakistan’s IT Minister of State, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, attributed the slow internet speeds to the increased use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). However, experts disagree, stating that widespread internet slowdown due to VPN usage is unlikely; it would only affect the specific device using the VPN.

A freelance computer scientist expressed regret, noting that many in the freelancing community have lost clients who used to pay them substantial amounts monthly. Many were heavily dependent on this income.

He also mentioned that numerous software houses in Pakistan are unable to meet their deadlines, resulting in clients canceling orders.

A Karachi-based freelancer added that clients have informed them they will be looking for better alternatives due to the internet outages. "They value every minute, and every update and deadline matters to them," he said.

Faraz Ahmed Khan, who has been freelancing for 10 years and works for Amazon, shared that he has encountered numerous problems recently. He stated that thousands of Pakistani freelancers working for foreign clients are struggling to maintain connections on their desktop computers due to internet service disruptions.

This frustrated freelancer revealed that he has lost 30% of his work within a week, with most of it going to India and Bangladesh.

Faraz added, "Tasks that used to take 15-20 minutes are now taking six to seven hours, which is causing clients to become frustrated with us."

Another freelancer, Mohammad Zubayer Shekh, shared that he had a "fresh account" on the online marketplace Fiverr and was earning around $1,000 per month. However, when he tried to access his account using a VPN, it became temporarily unavailable and was eventually blocked by Fiverr. Now, he has to start all over again.

Geo TV tried to reach out to Pakistan’s IT Minister of State for a comment on the nationwide internet service disruption, but she did not respond.
